Does the borough need more Hackney Carriages?
21st June 2009
Thurrock Council is to hold a consultation on whether to increase the availability of Hackney Carriages in the borough.
Members of the council’s Public Protection Committee unanimously agreed at their meeting on Monday, 8 June, to consult with residents and cab drivers over the future direction of Hackney Carriage provision.
Unlike a private hire vehicle that has to be pre-booked, Hackney Carriages can be hailed from the street or picked up from a rank.
Presently the number of Hackney Carriage licenses in Thurrock is restricted with only two new licences being issued every year after a lottery of applicants.
Councillor Rob Gledhill, who chairs the committee, said: "We hold this consultation every three years with residents on increasing the availability of Hackney Carriages. Your responses are important and will directly help shape the cab service in Thurrock for another three years."
He added: "I would encourage as many people as possible to take part. We want to hear your views on whether people would like to see more cabs or if they think enough are always readily available."
The consultation will run for six weeks, ending on 27 July.
The council will be writing to local cab companies, cab drivers and community forums, consultation papers will also be available from local libraries, reception at the Civic Offices and local housing offices.
There is also an online consultation form available from the Thurrock Council website.
