Sex Assaults Taxi Driver May Face Jail

27th June 2009

A Burton taxi driver could be facing a jail sentence after being convicted of sexually assaulting two female passengers.

Nadeem Hussain inappropriately touched the women during the two separate journeys.

Jurors at Stafford Crown Court found the 29-year-old, who denied the offences, guilty following a trial on Thursday.

A previous court hearing heard how Hussain picked up a passenger, who cannot be named for legal reasons, in Burton town centre and took her to the Travelodge on the A38.

The licensed driver ‘abused his position of trust’ after trying to kiss the victim in the car park and feel her leg on December 13.

Just eight days later, on December 21, Hussain took a different passenger to an un-named Burton address.

The court heard that he forced her up the side of the car and tried to kiss her, before grabbing her hand and making her feel his groin.

Following his conviction, reports will be drawn up on Hussain, of Blackpool Street, Burton, before he is sentenced at a date to be fixed.

He was released on bail, with a condition of residence.

In the meantime he has been given an interim sexual offences prevention order, which will place ‘prohibitions on Hussain’s activities’.

East Staffordshire Borough Council, which is responsible for licensing taxi drivers and firms, has suspended Hussain’s operating permit.

A spokesman told The Mail the authority was awaiting paperwork from the courts to confirm the conviction before taking the next step.

It is likely Hussain will be stripped of his permit.

Police spokesman Pete Stevens said: "This kind of offence is extremely rare.

"However, it is important if a passenger feels threatened that they should complain to the police or the local authority which has responsibility for managing taxis.

"I am sure 99.9 per cent of taxi drivers would abhor this behaviour."

Mohammed Ikhlaq, the chairman of the East Staffordshire Private Hire and Taxi Association, said it would be ‘inappropriate’ to comment on the case.'
