MANCHESTER

A cab driver who raped a man on a night out is being hunted by police.

The victim was heading home from the city centre at 6am on Sunday when he got into a private-hire car and asked to be taken to Salford.

He got out at The Quays and went into an apartment building. The attacker followed him inside, grabbed him and raped him in the stairwell.

Police say the man was left traumatised by his ordeal.

They say the cab was a silver VW Passat private hire car, with a `taxi' sign on the roof.

The man got in the car on Quay Street, Manchester.

The attacker was in his late 20s or early 30s and dark skinned.

He was about 5ft 9in, slightly overweight and had short brown or black hair. He had a beard and brown eyes and was wearing a brown leather jacket and a dark green jumper.

The report did not say it was a Manchester taxi, just that it was hired in Manchester. Not neccesarily the same thing. :wink:

Det Sgt Julie Connor, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "This was a brutal attack on a young man who has been left feeling traumatised.

"We want to appeal to taxi drivers in the city centre to tell us if they recognize the description he has given of his attacker."

The rapist was described as being in his late 20s or early 30s, dark skinned, possibly Asian, and of middle eastern or Iraqi appearance.

He was about 5ft 9in tall and slightly overweight with short brown or black hair and unshaven with a beard and brown eyes. He was wearing a brown leather jacket and a dark green jumper.

Good point.....but as it would be illegal for an "out of town" hack, as well as any private hire, to pick up a flagdown in Manchester, it must have been a booked job and they will be easy to trace....unless of course....there are people out there illegally plying for hire for financial gain, or even worse, pretending that they are taxi drivers for the same reason (or from this story, obviously worse reasons). Surely not! If that were the case and such instances had been heard of anywhere, wouldn't there be police and licensing officials out there watching for such things, even using CCTV etc., in order to protect the public?!! Mind you, the public need to start taking responsibility for themselves. The full facts surrounding this case are as yet unclear, but it isn't always down to ignorance of the law that makes people jump in any old shed that pulls up. They'll often risk their lives to avoid walking a few hundred yards to a taxi rank where these days, there is more than likely an over-supply of cabs waiting, or to save a couple of quid, or even not phone for a legit PH as they'd have to wait a few minutes.
