Taxi Driver thought he was going to Die at the hands of Norris Green Yob Knife Gang

24th June 2009

A taxi driver repeatedly slashed across the body and told he was going to be shot today spoke about his terrifying ordeal.

The 38-year-old from Walton was nearing the end of a 10-hour shift when he stopped to sort out a problem with his cab door on Sedgemoor Road, Norris Green, at around 4am on June 7.

As he got out he was attacked by three men who hit him on the head and slashed him across his face, back and arms while they rummaged for cash in his black cab.

The dad-of-two said: “They whacked the back of my head and I fell face down on the floor. I tried to fight back but they slashed my hands and arm and face.

“One of them said to me ‘If you move I’ve got a gun and will shoot you’. Two of the men stood on me and bent down and punched my head while one kept slashing my back about 10 times.

“I didn’t see the knife. But it must have been big because it went right through my tracksuit and T-shirt, but luckily didn’t go into my back.

“I felt a piece of metal or steel bar on the back on my neck and I just kept thinking I was going to die.

“A million things were going through my head.

“I started thinking about other shootings in the area and there was no point resisting, I was going to die.

“I was really scared, they slashed me three times on my cheek and my tracksuit was cut to ribbons.

“I was staring life and death in the face, but once they’d stolen around £180 takings they ran off.”

The police arrived at the scene and the cabbie was taken to hospital where his cuts were treated.

He has not been able to return to work and is considering quitting his job.

He said: “I used to enjoy my job and would chat to customers. I’m a happy-go-lucky fella. But I just keep thinking of my children. They’re terrified in case anything happens again.

“I was just trying to make a living and I know I don’t know what I’m going to do.”

Police released an e-fit of the main offender who is described as being between 18 and 20 years old with blonde hair and a freckly complexion.

Anyone who recognises the man or has information is asked to call St Anne St CID on 0151 777 4808 or tCrimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
