Unlicensed Vehicle Fine For West Cumbrian Taxi Firm

26th June 2009

A Workington taxi operator has been fined £350 for running a private hire vehicle without a licence, after being prosecuted by Allerdale council.

John Hoban, 48, who runs John Hoban Travel, pleaded guilty to permitting the use of an unlicensed private hire vehicle when he appeared before West Allerdale magistrates.

The court heard how a routine transport inspection at Mayfield School, Whitehaven, found a black Ford Mondeo dropping off two passengers at around 8.45am on April 1.

The vehicle was not displaying any hackney carriage or private hire livery. The car was not licensed for private hire.

Hoban admitted that the vehicle was used on a county council contract while unlicensed.

He was ordered to pay £75 costs and a victim surcharge of £15.

It is obviously too much to ask that the council, before issuing contracts, ensure that the vehicles and drivers are actually licensed

I send in a list of my vehicles and drivers with copies of the plates and badges. So the council know what vehicles I am using. However unless they recieve information or do a spot check they have no way of knowing if I am actually using the vehicles as stated.

Maybe the school, and the council paying, should be prosecuted as accomplices.
