Man Jailed For Stabbing Taxi Driver

6th July 2009

A Stretford man who stabbed a taxi driver in the groin, leaving him out of work for three months, has been jailed.

Anthony Watson, 42, of Barton Road, stabbed his victim last September after brawling at a boxing match in Wythenshawe.

The dispute between the two men stretched back to the summer of 2008, when Watson's dog attacked the victim’s own dog.

This came to a head in September when the pair had a scuffle in the foyer of the Forum Centre before a boxing event.

The victim got a taxi to his home in Sharston at about midnight and found Watson waiting for him. Watson then stabbed him in the left side of his groin.

The victim was taken to hospital with a one-and-a-half inch stab wound, and because of medication he was taking it developed into a large bruise, restricting his movement.

Detective Constable Dominic Heslop, of West Didsbury CID, said: "Although the victim had to miss 12 weeks of work, he is very lucky he did not suffer more serious injuries as the weapon only narrowly missed the femoral artery. That could have left him permanently disabled.

"The dispute between the victim and the offender spiralled out of control to the point where Watson resorted to weapons in a bid to settle it.

"He clearly went to the victim's home that night with the intention of hurting him, why else would he be carrying a knife? It is no exaggeration to say that this man could have died as we have all seen and read how tragic knife crime can be.

"I hope that seeing him behind bars gives the victim some peace of mind and he can now move forward with his life."

Watson pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent at an earlier hearing and on Friday he was sentenced to two years in prison at Manchester Crown Court, Crown Square.
