Cabbie: I Feared For My Life During Mugging

Monday 6th July 2009

A taxi driver who was robbed at knifepoint on an Oxford estate feared that he was going to be killed in the attack.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the 44-year-old driver, from 001 Taxis, was called to Druce Way, in Blackbird Leys, at about 12.30am on Sunday, to pick up two men.

One of the passengers got into the car, sat on the back seat and then grabbed the driver from behind.

He then put a knife to the driver’s cheek.

The second robber then got into the car and sat on the front seat before taking the cabbie’s wallet, which contained £130 in cash.

The robbers then got out of the car and ran off across Sandy Lane towards the Oxford Stadium greyhound track.

The taxi driver, who asked not to be named, said: “When he put the knife on me, I thought it was the end of my life.

“Luckily, they just wanted money and I gave them what I had.

“The knife was nearly on my throat and I have a bruise.

“I won’t stop working – I have one child and a second on the way.

“The people who did this have no place in the community of Oxford.”

The robber with the knife who got into the back of the taxi was described as black, about 6ft and of slim build.

He was wearing a black hooded top, tracksuit bottoms and gloves.

The second man was said to be of a similar description, but was much fatter.

Anyone who may have seen the two men in the area around the time of the robbery should call Oxford police on 08458 505505 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

A partition between driver and passenger may have prevented this.
