Taxi Drivers and Police Discuss Concerns About Drivers’ Safety

July 17 2009

A FORUM is to take place between taxi drivers and police officers to address fears about driver safety at night.

Cab drivers say they face verbal abuse and physical assaults and at least two drivers have been badly beaten up in the past 12 months.

Chief Inspector Steve Murray, based at Cardiff Central police station, said officers take offences against drivers seriously.

He said: “Taxi drivers have a challenging job at times and we appreciate the work they do in taking people, who are often intoxicated, home.

“Unfortunately incidents such as criminal damage, assault and verbal abuse can occur and I wish to reassure the taxi community that they are investigated thoroughly. These kinds of offences will not be tolerated and we carry out extensive inquiries to catch perpetrators.”

The forum, called the Cardiff, Barry and Vale Taxi Partnership, will meet next month to discuss any concerns and measures to reduce crime. The Partnership is made up of police officers, local authority representatives and Cardiff’s Hackney Carriage Association. Representatives of all major private taxi companies are invited.

It's a good start but these things need to be on-going, and need to be effective.
