Cabbie Attacked When He Drove Gang To Police Station After £10 Fare Row
22nd July 2009
A taxi driver was attacked when he took a gang of men to the police station because they were shouting and swearing.
Aaron Singleton, 21, of Fairless Avenue, Lightcliffe, admitted attacking Mohammed Javaid when he took them to Brighouse police station.
The problems started with a dispute over the fare.
Sophie Drake, prosecuting said Mr Javaid was taking three men from Huddersfield to Brighouse at 2am on November 20.
They asked to go to Bailiff Bridge and when Mr Javaid told them it would cost between £10 and £12 one of the passengers said they only had £7.
When he said he would take them as far as Sainsbury's in Brighouse, they began swearing and shouting so he took them to the police station, Miss Drake told Bradford Crown Court.
One of the men then pulled Mr Javaid's head back and covered his mouth with his hand.
Singleton punched Mr Javaid and another man took his car keys.
He was then kicked in the head and body and had to flag an ambulance down for help.
Gerald Hendron, for Singleton, urged Judge Roger Scott not to lock Singleton up.
He admitted affray and was given a community order for 12 months with 100 hours' unpaid work.
He was also ordered to pay Mr Javaid £250 compensation.
