This is right on the Birmingham / Redditch border; in fact the boundary must run down the middle of the road.

Just wondering if it was a Brum driver, which knowing the location is more than likely.

But I have not heard anything yet. If I hear any more I will post on here.

I have just been told that the driver was a Birmingham Private Hire driver & that the hiring was from Kings Norton, a suburb on the southern border of Birmingham.

But nothing fully confirmed as yet.

Cops Probe Cabbie's Death

23rd July 2009

A taxi driver has died after he was attacked and found dying on a street.

Paramedics were called to Wasthill Lane in the Hopwood area of Birmingham shortly before 9pm last night.

Police said the victim was a cab driver in his 30s from the West Midlands area and his injuries were the result of an assault.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "When crews arrived they found a man lying beside the road who had suffered very serious injuries.

"A policeman had already started first aid. Crews immediately took over and started advanced treatment.

"The man was taken on blue lights to Selly Oak Hospital where medics were on stand-by.

"The paramedic officer travelled with the ambulance crew to provide additional help.

"Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of ambulance and hospital staff, it was not possible to save the man and he was confirmed dead shortly after arrival."

Unexplained

A spokesman for West Mercia Police said: "I can confirm that we are investigating the unexplained death of a man in Wasthill Lane, Hopwood.

"We will not be releasing any further information about the man's injuries at this stage."

A 100-metre stretch of the residential road was closed in both directions this morning.

Within the cordoned-off zone, a white forensic tent was erected and a number of police officers remained at the scene today.

The ambulance service and West Mercia Police — who have launched an investigation — refused to comment on the precise nature of the man's injuries.

Anyone with information is urged to call West Mercia Police at Redditch on 0300 333 3000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Dreadful story, and let's hope his family get the answers and the justice they deserve in the fullness of time.

Taxi driver dies following attack

A taxi driver has died after being found seriously injured at a roadside. The Asian man in his 30s, was found in Wast Hill Lane, in Hopwood, on the border of Birmingham and Worcestershire, police said. "It is believed he was the victim of a serious assault," a West Mercia Police spokeswoman said.

He was found by a member of the public about 2050 BST on Wednesday and was taken by ambulance to hospital where he died the following morning. Police said the family of the driver, who was from the West Midlands, had been informed.

Det Spt Shelia Thornes said the taxi driver's blue Ford Galaxy people carrier was found in Shannon Road, Birmingham, - about one mile (1.6km) from where he was found. The vehicle was being examined by forensic specialists.

Ms Thornes said: "There has been a lot of speculation about how this man came by his death and possible motives. "At this early stage we are keeping an open mind and are looking at all lines of inquiry."

Police particularly want to hear from anyone who was in the Wast Hill Lane or Shannon Road areas on Wednesday night or who may have used the taxi involved. A post-mortem examination was due to take place.

Cabbie Battered To Death By Boy Racers

24th July 2009

A taxi driver died after being beaten to an "unrecognisable pulp" by a gang of boy racers.

It is believed that dad-of-three Mohammed Arshad, 36, was attacked with a hammer after becoming involved in a row.

He was dragged from his car, savagely assaulted and left lying in a pool of blood by a country lane. The gang are then thought to have driven his motor away.

Radio controllers at Mohammed's cab firm last heard from their driver as he went to pick up a fare at a McDonald's - then suddenly went "off radar".

He was found badly hurt on Wedesday night in Hopwood, near Birmingham, but died in hospital. His blue Ford Galaxy people carrier was abandoned a mile away. Locals said the area - near Premier League team Birmingham City's training complex - was plagued by drug-taking youths driving fast cars and organising illegal dog fights.

Mohammed's family - including his pregnant partner Shahida Hussain, 34 - were too distraught to talk at their home in Selly Oak last night.

A 20-year-old radio operator at his firm, who rushed to his bedside, said: "He was beaten to an unrecognisable pulp, he had bruising and cuts everywhere on his face. He has worked for the company for the last four years. We're absolutely devastated with the thugs that have done this."

Another co-worker said: "I couldn't believe his injuries were so bad. He was really nice."

West Midlands Police have launched a murder inquiry and are carrying out forensic tests on the car. They have not ruled out a racist motive.

Family pays tribute to murdered Birmingham taxi driver

July 24 2009

The family of a 36-year-old taxi driver found fatally injured by a road side have spoken of their loss.

Detectives launched a murder hunt after father-of-three Mohammed Arshad was found with serious injuries south of Birmingham in Wast Hills Lane, Hopwood, on the border with Worcestershire.

Last night his family released a statement saying: “He was a loving husband who adored his wife and children and had a very close relationship with his sons, aged eight, six and three years old.

“He was a man with a big heart who was always there for others. Both his family, community and colleagues have suffered a major loss. For those close to him the brutal nature of his murder is impossible to comprehend.”

Mr Arshad, whose wife is seven months pregnant with their fourth child, lived in Umberslade Road, Selly Oak, and worked for A Cars, based in Pershore Road, Kings Norton.

It is believed he had picked up a fare from Monyhull Hall Road in Kings Norton, before he died.

Paramedics were sent to Wast Hills Lane at 8.50pm on Wednesday and found him lying at the side of the road with serious injuries but he was pronounced dead at Selly Oak Hospital. His Ford Galaxy taxi was later found dumped in nearby Shannon Road, Kings Norton.

Ifran Ahmed, chairman of the Birmingham and Solihull Taxi Association, said: “We are all shocked and appalled by this complete waste of life.

“Our members drive black cabs, but some of them knew him. I did not know him personally, but some of my colleagues did and nobody has a bad word to say against him.

“He was a very good guy. He was a hard-working family man, with a young wife and a young family.

“Every single day and night drivers in black cabs and private hire vehicles put themselves in danger and it’s getting worse. If we defend ourselves we get into trouble and if we complain to the police they do not react to our complaints.”

Taxi Convoy Following Man's Death

25th July 2009

A convoy of about 200 taxi drivers gathered in Birmingham city centre to show their support for a colleague who died after being stabbed in the head.

Mohammed Arshad, 36, from Birmingham, was found in Wast Hills Lane, Kings Norton, on Wednesday evening and died in hospital the following morning.

His Ford Galaxy was found abandoned in Shannon Road, Birmingham.

The gathering on Friday night which started on Suffolk Street Queensway was "peaceful and dignified", police said.

The West Midlands force added the event, involving private hire taxis and which lasted from 2200 BST on Friday until 0200 BST on Saturday, was a "dignified display of solidarity and respect for a colleague".

A post-mortem examination carried out on Thursday confirmed Mr Arshad died of stab wounds to the head.

West Mercia Police said tests also established that he suffered other injuries to his body.

The force said it was a "horrific" attack on a well-respected man.

Mr Arshad's family described him as "loving and caring" and devoted to his three sons.

Wast Hills Lane is on the border of Birmingham and Worcestershire.

Shannon Road, where his vehicle was abandoned, is about one mile (1.6km) from where Mr Arshad was found.

That's a step in the right direction by the police.

That top he is wearing is reasonably distinctive & may jog someone's memory.

The sooner he is caught the better.
