Cabbies angry with police enforcement
ANGRY cabbies say their livelihoods are at risk after police stepped up parking enforcement at Three Bridges train station. At a full meeting of Crawley Borough Council on Wednesday (July 22), taxi driver Alan Howard challenged council leader Bob Lanzer to take up the issue with police, saying cabbies' jobs had become 'virtually impossible'.
But in a statement after the meeting, police said they were responding to 'numerous complaints' from residents about double parking at the
entrance to the station and they would continue to move vehicles on.
Mr Howard said at the meeting: "As of last week our life has been made virtually impossible by the enforcement of traffic regulations by the police. "Will the council see fit to end the current police action preventing us from doing our jobs properly?"
He also slammed the council for an increase in licensed taxis in the town, which he claimed further endangered their livelihood. He said: "Will Mr Lanzer explain why the issue of deregulation and over-supply of taxis isn't seen as an issue to be discussed by the licensing committee?" Cllr Lanzer pledged to discuss the issue of double-parking enforcement with the police.
A Sussex police spokesman later said: "In response to numerous complaints made by members of the local community about taxi drivers double parking outside Three Bridges railway station, police are in consultation with the council to find a suitable solution.
"Meanwhile, all drivers are reminded to be considerate to other road users and local residents, by not parking in a manner which could cause an accident. "Police will continue to move vehicles on, if they are dangerously parked. Public safety remains paramount."
