Anger at taxi's £50 charge for mud

A SINGLE mother was appalled when a taxi driver took all her children's holiday savings because they had left some mud in his car. Josephine Pisarkiewcz took her daughter Ebony and two of her friends on a dog walk and picnic in the hills beside Well Lane to celebrate Ebony's 13th birthday last Thursday.

As a treat Josephine decided to take a taxi back home to Lowood Drive but was dismayed when at the end of the journey the driver charged her £50 for leaving the seats damp and muddy.

Josephine explained to the driver that the only spare money she had in the house were holiday savings collected in a tin by Ebony and her 14-year-old brother Joseph and she pleaded with him to let her clean the seats herself.

"The driver obviously saw us when he picked us up and if he'd told me at the start that he was going to be charging me £50 because we were muddy, then we would've walked," said Josephine.

"I asked about the dog and I offered to walk it home, but he said it would be fine so we put the dog in the boot, it didn't even go near the seats. I just couldn't believe it when he dropped us off and demanded £50 from me.

"I even begged and pleaded with him to let me clean the seats with my steam cleaner, but he wanted the £50 and it didn't make a difference to him that it was my children's holiday savings.

Josephine, who works at a Bridlington residential home, said she will struggle to replace her children's money. "I'm not on benefits, I work hard and have been planning our holiday to Malaga for 18 months," she said.

"If I'd have been blind drunk at 2am and thrown up all over the car, then fair enough, you'd expect to be charged," she said. "But it wasn't like that at all, we'd had a lovely day enjoying a picnic and the driver was chatting to us on the journey. He could see that I was a reasonable person, but then to charge me £50 and take the kid's money was just unbelievable."

The manager of Q-Cars, Richard Allinson, said that council policy stated taxi drivers should impose a £50 charge if their car is soiled by a passenger and has to be taken off the road. "It had been raining that day and the driver wasn't aware of how bad the mess was until they all got out of the car," said Richard.

"The seats were wet and muddy and the driver had to take his car off the road for the rest of the evening to clean them and dry them out. "The drivers are just out to make a living and we don't make the rules about the £50 charge, it's council policy," he said.

If they soil my seats or carpets then the soiling charge will be implemented, child, man or woman animal or non animal they are going to pay.
