Kenny MacAskill, Cabinet Secretary for Justice in Scotland, agrees with the Procurator Fiscal that refusing to pay a taxi fare in Scotland is NOT a criminal offence. He writes:

"I understand that the Procurator Fiscal Depute concluded that due to the particular circumstances of this case, it neither constituted theft nor a crime of fraud. It is therefore extremely unlikely that the non-paying passenger will be charged with commiting a criminal offence on this occasion and if (the driver) wishes to pursue it further it would have to be a civil matter".

There you have it. All a passenger has to do is claim a dispute and, despite the existing dispute procedures put in place by the council, he can refuse to pay.

Remember, the circumstances here are that the passenger was requested to pay by the police and the driver and left the vehicle deliberately without paying - a criminal offence in England and also in Scotland if he'd left a shop rather than a taxi without paying.

It's now open season for theft from Scottish taxi drivers.

And there was me believing that Scots Law was somehow superior. How so if it doesn't protect us from criminals?

I'm not convnced he was guilty. Tried before three judges, no jury, his was a political show trial.

Jim Swire, whose daughter was a victim, also isn't convinced he was responsible.

The Americans need him to stay in jail with no appeal or inquiry. What have they got to hide?

We're nowhere near knowng the truth.

Anyway, MacAskill hasn't covered himself in glory as Cabinet Secretary.

Here he's using the specifics of the case as an excuse not to get involved. He can do this because my inexperienced MSP gave him all the papers and asked for his comment rather than asking the specific questions needed.

I'll be in touch withth MSP this week to see how far he will take it. I hope he doesn't see his job finished. I would hope that we could arrange some publicity and ask a queston, perhaps even of Alex Salmond (I always believe in dealing with the head honcho) regarding the specifics of Scots Law compared with the English Statute of 1998.

I also intend to engge with the PF complaints system. It would appear that Neil Allan is a depute PF. As I say, head honcho.

This is only the beginning.

Very true but I doubt they will be contemplating anything which would give creedence to these claims.

Jasbar is far from alone in believing that the 2 men who appeared in court at Camp Zeist were just fall guys.
The real responsibility lies with Uncle Sam's new "friend" in the arabic world. His part in all this seems to have been conveniently forgotten. :roll:

Government depends on your fear of it.

Precisely the same in the taxi trade. That's why drivers are exploited. They allow themselves to be.
