DVLA Changed Man's Details Without 'checks' 14 August 2009 A Morecambe taxi driver has slammed the DVLA for allowing him to drive for more than 10 months despite his licence being revoked. Paul Wearing, 46, from Osbourne Grove has Type 2 Diabetes and suffered dizzy spells following a change in his medication. He attended the doctor almost a year ago, and was signed off until he got better. His doctor then sent a letter to Lancaster City Council to say he was fit for work and he was given the all clear. It was only when Paul misplaced the pink section of his driving licence and applied to get it renewed that he found out his licence had been revoked all that time, and that he had, in fact, been driving illegally. He said: "It's unbelievable. The DVLA have made a huge cock-up and just not told me that they had revoked my licence. There have been no proper checks made and all this time I've been driving members of the public around in the taxi. "I dread to think what could have happened and I wonder how many other people are driving around without a licence for the same reasons?" Mr Wearing has now not been driving for three weeks and has had to apply for benefits while he awaits the DVLA's decision. He added: "I'm on the dole now, and I can't afford to be. All I want to do is go back to work." A spokesperson for Lancaster City Council said that Mr Wearing renewed his Hackney Carriage licence in February and that they had received no information to say he was not eligible to drive from either the DVLA or the police. The DVLA won't comment on individual cases but confirmed they would be contacting Mr Wearing to discuss his application. Source; LancasterGuardian.co.uk |
