Huddersfield Teenager Locked Up For Attack On Cabbie

Sept 9 2009

A drunken teenager who tried to rob a Huddersfield taxi driver at knifepoint has been locked up by a judge.

Jamie Burlington-Kent, 17, pulled out a lock-knife and thrust it towards the face of cabbie Rajatalat Khan after getting into his taxi in the early hours of May 3.

Prosecutor Ian Brook told Bradford Crown Court yesterday (TUES) that the teenager shouted at the frightened cabbie: "Give me all the money that you’ve got."

CCTV footage of the incident in John William Street showed the two men then getting out of the vehicle and Mr Khan speaking to other drivers nearby.

Burlington-Kent was caught on camera kicking out at the one of the car’s windows before leaving the scene.

Mr Brook said police officers later spotted the teenager nearby and when he was arrested they found the discarded lock-knife in the area.

During his police interview Burlington-Kent said he would not have stabbed the taxi driver, but wanted to scare him into handing over the money.

The teenager, of Bath Street, Huddersfield, pleaded guilty to the attempted robbery charge and was yesterday sentenced to an 18-month detention and training order.

His barrister Gillian Batts said her client had expressed remorse for the offence and since being remanded at the Wetherby Young Offenders Institution he had taken steps to address his alcohol problems.

Recorder David Bradshaw told Burlington-Kent: "You have a record but nothing in comparison with this offence.

"'This was a very serious offence where you threatened a taxi driver with a knife, trying to rob him when he’s going about his business."
