MacAskill vows to clamp down on gangsters targeting taxi trade JUSTICE secretary Kenny MacAskill today promised to clamp down on gangsters trying to muscle in on the taxi trade. He highlighted the important role the legitimate taxi and private hire car trade plays in the local economy in Edinburgh and the Lothians. He said: "We won't allow hard-working cabbies who borrow from the bank or mortgage their home to buy a cab and make a living to be driven off the road by crooks." Mr MacAskill made his comments as he met Frank Smith, Edinburgh's newly appointed cab inspector, and representatives of the Scottish Taxi Federation at the Scottish Parliament. He said: "Tackling serious organised crime is one of the Scottish Government's top priorities. "Where it infiltrates legitimate business, like the taxi and private hire trade, we are determined to take action." |

Aye...so why doesnt he take action in every other type of legitimate Business that has been "infiltrated" by gangsters Eg: Pubs,Clubs, Money lenders, Hotels, garages etc...seems the Mans obsessed with just the TAXI/PHV business. True..it may help get rid of the Bad un's but it just makes me feel like were all under suspicion. Is he seriously trying to say that Money laundering only happens in this particular business sector!! |

I wish he would take action ,but i think this is another pr stunt.We have just been given a copy of the draft report on license of booking offices and if the councils enforce these conditions we just might be able to sort out Dundee's ph problem,but i will not hold my breath. I would post the Draft but i am unable to put the paper work into a format that will allow me to post it.One other condition was interesting was that every office had to have a % of wavs it did not say what the % had to be. |

This is more on the story The Scottish government is launching a new crackdown on criminals operating in the Edinburgh and Lothian taxi trades. Police will be working together with the government and local councils to monitor the activities of taxi drivers in these areas amid concerns that organised crime is infiltrating the sector. Among the measures being taken is the introduction of a dedicated cab inspector, as well as more thorough investigations of private hire premises, records and booking offices. |
