Passengers escape injury in taxi glassing

TAXI passengers were left covered in shattered glass when a yob broke the rear window of a cab in Swindon.

A man is believed to have thrown a glass at the taxi outside the Roaring Donkey pub in Old Town on Saturday night before running off towards Wood Street.

Driver Allan Wells said one of three young women in the back seat of the Mercedes could have been killed.

He said: “If that glass had hit one of them in the head, they could have been left unconscious. I feel bad for them because the glass could have killed them. The back window was completely shattered.

“There was no glass left in it. A lot of glass went over the passengers. I heard the smash and stopped the car and a guy went running.”

Mr Wells, of Network Taxis, said he was driving down Albert Street at about 11pm when someone bent his wing mirror back. He said he heard swearing and shouting before the window broke.

“The person responsible did a runner,” he said.

“He wasn’t man enough to stand up to his responsibility.

“He should not have thrown a glass at a moving vehicle. He could have killed one of those girls.”

Mr Wells and his colleague Brian Edgell are keen for the culprit to be identified.

Mr Wells said: “Somebody knows who did this. There were a lot of people on Albert Street.”

Mr Edgell added: “The guy was a maniac. There were millions of shards of glass everywhere.”

The girls are not believed to have been seriously injured and were taken away in another taxi after the incident.

Mr Wells said: “I phoned them and they said they were okay. They were very calm during the incident.”

His new taxi was only four weeks old.

“I am devastated,” he said. “I can’t work until the glass is repaired.”

Inspector Paul Hawkins, of Swindon police, said: “We are seeking witnesses so if anyone has information or knows who is responsible, please can they contact the duty inspector at Swindon Police.”

Anyone with information is asked to telephone Swindon Police on 0845 408 7000 or Crimestoppers anonymously on: 0800 555 111.
