Rage of passenger after taxi A MAN was charged with criminal damage after smashing a taxi's window when the driver refused to take him the wrong way up a one-way street. Iftikhar Ahmed, the driver, said he would not drive Paul Honour, 27, of Brewery Street, Boothtown, Halifax, the wrong way up the one-way street. Mr Ahmed stopped in Fountain Street, Halifax, and asked him to pay the £4 fare. Honour refused to pay and said: "I'm giving you nothing, you robbed me here." He then punched, and smashed, the rear passenger window, causing £120 damage. Calderdale magistrates ordered him to pay £120 compensation to Mr Ahmed, costs of £60 and a victim surcharge of £15. |

It is much easier to stop someone going into a stadium than to stop them booking a taxi. The one thing with incidents like this that always strikes me is how did the driver handle the customer ? In my experience there is a right way and a wrong way to say no to someone who is drunk I doubt that this is incuded in nvq courses but perhaps it should be bacause although in this case it was a broken window in some it is far worse |

It is supposed to be covered on the Btec too. I believe the tone of voice you use when dealing with these type of passengers is important and something that drivers with English as a second language can sometimes find difficult to achieve. |

You are correct, but the surcharge does fund folks who's sole job it is to make the court experience a little bit more bearable for folks not use to court procedure. i.e. victim support. IMO they do a great job.

Does lamping them in the face with a clenched fist come into the training? That would overcome the language barrier. |

As its title suggests...why not just charge it to the Victim, after all everything else seems to lean in favour of the offender rather than the victim these days so why should the victim appear to escape paying this surcharge..I mean is it truly fair to expect the guy that beats the Crap out of you to make him pay the surcharge as well as the fine..that flys in the face of his human rights

CC Aye catalogue terms, if he doesn't pay it there's nothing the courts can do about it. About 10 years ago a little scrote decided to slip his hand down the side of my seat and nick my cash machine, I caught up with him because the job I'd done was for an employment agency, I phoned the agency up and they gladly gave me his address, I went round to his house to be met by his dad, his dad knocked 7 bales of the brown stuff out of him then phoned the police, they came and arrested him, thrown him in front of the courts, he was fined £100 and told to repay me the £50 he took plus £25 compensation. I got £15 back then I got a phone call from the police asking me if I'd like him to serve a day in prison in lieu of payment because he'd been arrested for something else, the copper said you'll only get your money in drips when he pays the court, in the end I said OK but don't let me clap eyes on him again. 2 weeks later he's walking the streets and who's coming up the road?? Yours truly  I got the best £50 worth money could buy.

I'm hoping things have changed in the last 10 years. Basically if you don't pay your court fines/costs/compensation, then you will go to jail. Else your car can be taken, a charge on your house can be placed on it, amounts can be automatically taken from benefits, or an attachment to earnings can be made. Nowadays the courts have targets to get at least 95% of outstanding fines, and 100% of outstanding compensation. |
