Taxi owners horrified at by-law to limit trade By TAXI owners have reacted with horror to a suggestion that a former Wansbeck by-law limiting their trade may be rolled out across the county. In last week's News Post Leader we reported how the issue of limiting the number of taxis which could be parked outside someone's home was brought up at a meeting of North Bedlington Parish Council. Coun Stephen Armstrong had suggested that the Wansbeck restriction be kept in place limiting the number of taxis to one and the size to an eight-seater mini bus, due to difficulty parking and there was discussion as to whether this restriction could be implemented in the rest of the county. But the chair of the Castle Morpeth Public and Private Association, Dave Routledge, said he has been inundated by calls from concerned members. "Whilst we all agree it is difficult to park anywhere, not just in a street where a taxi driver lives we feel it is grossly unfair to put forward proposals aimed solely at the public and private hire trade," he said. "We do recognise this by-law was in place in the recently defunct Wansbeck district of Northumberland but that is no reason to roll the proposal out across the whole county. "The parking of any vehicle on any highway causes a restriction to the manoeuvres or parking of other vehicles and the whole thing snowballs as more and more cars seek fewer parking places. "It would be more prudent to educate everyone to park in a sensible and considerate manner. "At best his proposal is narrow minded and at worst represents a potential restriction of trade issue and is blatant discrimination. "Why not pass a by-law that restricts all residencies to one vehicle outside the perimeter of their property or apply the law to all commercial vehicles. Taxis, unfortunately are an easy target and are instantly recognisable. "Under the old Castle Morpeth Borough Council any proprietor wishing to trade or use taxis from a domestic residence had to approach the planning committee to seek approval, surely this is a better way forward than a wholesale ban on over parking of taxis." A spokesperson for Northumberland County Council said: "There is no general restriction in the former Wansbeck area to limit the number of licensed vehicles outside a residential property. "However should someone wish to use their home to run a private hire operators business then planning or licensing conditions could be imposed to limit the number of vehicles permitted outside the property at any one time, depending on the circumstances of each case." |
