Taxis given safety check



TAXIS underwent spot checks to ensure they are carrying passengers in wheelchairs safely.

All black cabs are designed to take wheelchairs, which should always be rear-facing and secured with a seat belt.

Tameside Council licensing officers visited local taxi ranks to talk to drivers and ensure they are fully aware of how to carry wheelchair users correctly.

Cllr Catherine Piddington said: "I know the majority of cab drivers take their responsibility seriously but unfortunately we do receive a small number of complaints about the minority who are not complying with safety regulations.

"We will be checking drivers know the correct procedures for carrying wheelchairs and will be offering further guidance where necessary."
