Driver shortage keeps taxis off the road 11:50 AEDT Mon Dec 6 2004 Up to two-thirds of Darwin taxis are off the road at night because there aren't enough drivers, a leading industry figure said on Sunday. Taxi Council NT president Terry Pachos said Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights were the worst, the Northern Territory News reported. He said up to a quarter of taxis were not available on Friday and Saturday nights. "We have no drivers to pick up the taxis," said Mr Pachos, a taxi operator for 15 years. So is the answer to limit the number of taxis until the driver to cab ratio improves? Is the answer better terms and conditions and wages for drivers?
