Private hire pick-ups to be driven out

ALL private hire cars in the Capital will have to show "pre-booked hires only" signs from next month.

The oval signs, to be displayed on passenger doors, are the latest attempt to ensure private hire cars do not accept passengers who hail them on the street, which only taxis are allowed to do.

The new rule is due to come into force from 4 November, with the signs available from the council's cab office from 7 October.

At a council meeting next week, 14 private hire drivers are to request to be exempt from the new legislation.

One Broxburn-based driver, Alan Miney, was among those to object to the council about the plans.

He said: "My clients include many high-profile professionals from the business and entertainment sectors who wish to travel discreetly to various locations in Scotland."

now this is interesting

if a car is a PRIVATE hire vehicle (emphasis on PRIVATE) why should it have ANY signs, as a ex-HC driver (with a rooflight) ive had the new years eve shambles down broad street with everyone trying to get in, but with a non-descript vehicle with no signs at all, there is no confusion, its a private car - not a "taxi" (of any description)

the option locally, is to plate an "executive" car - and only have a rear plate to on view, seen as you drive away.....

Our exemption is to display the small front window plate and not have the big oval ones on theside or the plate on the back. I know that South Derbyshire display a very small oblong bit of paper in the front window that is about half the size of the tax disc.

Still, if low lifes wish to run off from a touting scab without paying, who am I to complain.

We've had this for years now, it doesn't work as it just looks like a firm advert, maybe if one was made up that encircled the door handles stating this vehicle is uninsured unless pre booked on it maybe someone might take notice.
