Row over taxi advert restrictions http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/dorset/8290136.stm Taxi drivers in a Dorset town bidding for the right to put adverts on their vehicles have criticised proposed restrictions. Christchurch hackney carriage drivers claim firms are struggling and advertising income is sorely needed. But a report has recommended only local companies should be allowed to advertise and that the posters should not include any telephone numbers. The council has not commented on the concerns. A decision is due later. Transparent posters Taxi driver Chris Wilcox said: "Who is going to want to advertise with their phone numbers not on the adverts? "It is not as if we are asking for multi-coloured cabs or ones with advertising all over it, it is only going to be an A3-sized poster. "Some other firms have gone out of business and a lot of the independent drivers are struggling. "I don't think the council is helping much at all." Another proposed restriction would be only allowing transparent posters or ones with black backgrounds - matching the colour of the taxis. Christchurch Borough Council declined to comment on the specific concerns but the report said "no telephone numbers are to be included in adverts; this is consistent with Bournemouth Borough Council's policy". It also stated: "It does not seem appropriate for companies out of the area to be advertised on Christchurch licensed vehicles. "From the point of view of the public this could cause confusion as to which authority licences the vehicle and therefore which to contact, or in which area they can flag down the vehicle." The matter will be decided at a licensing meeting at 1800 BST. |

Might a better approach be to maintain a list of local businesses and give them first shout on the cab advertising? If those businesses decline the offer to advertise in the cabs then the owner/driver could then court deals with advertisers who weren't local. |
