MORE than a third of Sheffield taxi and private hire drivers failed spot checks during a four-month crackdown over the summer.

Sheffield Council enforcement staff were out checking conditions of vehicles and ensuring they were properly licensed and insured between May and August.

A total of 273 checks took place on 162 drivers and 111 vehicles - and 102 had breached the rules, Sheffield Council has revealed.

Seventy-seven offenders were issued with notices to improve for minor problems, 19 were given formal warnings and three received police cautions.

Three of the most serious breaches resulted in prosecutions.

But Hafeas Rehman, chairman of Sheffield Taxi Trade Association, said: "I don't think the situation is as bad as the statistics make out.

"Most of the notices and warnings were for minor things like taxis waiting for passengers when they were not at taxi ranks or involved drivers who had forgotten their official badges.

"Unfortunately, the recession has led to a decline in customers, so some drivers have been waiting where they shouldn't, to try to collect more fares.

"But this could be avoided by designating more taxi ranks closer to where customers are. In Hillsborough, for example, the rank is in Bradfield Road but there are customers wanting taxis from the old Deep End, on Langsett Road."

Two private hire drivers were prosecuted for plying for hire without hackney carriage licences, which means they are not insured to collect passengers who have not booked in advance.

One received six penalty points on his licence and was fined £100, ordered to pay £75 costs and a £15 surcharge. The other also received six penalty points, a £50 fine and had to pay £45 costs.

The third prosecution involved a private hire vehicle found to be in poor condition.

All three most serious offenders, who were from Sheffield, were caught in the summer's biggest taxi enforcement operation on August 13 and 14.

The exercise was run jointly by Sheffield Council, North East Derbyshire Council, South Yorkshire Police and the Government's Vehicle Inspectorate.

Frances Woodhead, director of legal services at Sheffield Council, said: "Over 25 vehicles were thoroughly checked for roadworthiness and council officers checked the drivers."

We can debate forever if the actual faults are that major or not, but we really must take our hats off at the amount of vehicles checked.

They have checked more in those two days than most councils have done since 1847.

There was a bit of a yellow taxi gimmick in Dundee for a while so they might have come from there; I don't think there were that many and I haven't seen any for a couple of years, but they were Octavias.

There's now a yellow Octavia in the East Neuk of Fife, but apparenty it's been having mega problems and has been off the road a lot, so expect it in the Borders soon

Do the rego numbers give any indication as to where they are from, Skippy?

What gets me about these Sheffield Taxi drivers is they are earning the money so why don't they spend some on their motors? If they are running a motor why don't they put away £40 a week for repairs, every 10th week or 10,000 miles book it in for a service, 10 weeks saving £40 a week gives you £400, even a service at the main LTI dealership won't cost you that much.

How much do Giaconi's charge in Nottingham Derby Ram? I know you've used them before and I remember you saying that they were well good on price, A few of the lads in our manor use them and they rate them well up there with the best.
