CCTV could keep an ever-watchful eye on Kingston taxi touts

Late night taxi drivers who think they are getting away with stopping on double yellow lines opposite Oceana could find themselves with fines in the post.

Kingston town centre managers and police are set to ask the council to reconsider using CCTV cameras to catch the licence plates of any taxis which stop.

Taxis and minicabs are tightly controlled in Kingston to ensure the safety of people using them and help traffic flow smoothly.

The move has been considered before, but was rejected due to fears it would catch parents briefly stopping to drop off or pick up their children.

At the moment, late night traffic wardens patrol the area but have to be escorted by a police officer.

Graham McNally, town centre manager, said: “It is a perfectly reasonable approach to take and then you apologise to the occasional parent that gets caught in the net.

"The parents might be annoyed because they get a letter but it will stop illegal minicabs. There are all sorts of horrible stories out there which may or may not be urban legends about young women being assaulted and all stuff like that when they use an unlawful minicab."

New borough commander Martin Greenslade is also considering proposing the use of CCTV to patrol the hotspot, Mr McNally said.

The article is so badly written it ends up contradicting itself halfway through.

If they don't like taxis sitting there they should put down different restrictions.
