Elgin taxi drivers criticise licensing decision

Taxi firms in Elgin have raised concerns about the recent decision not to limit the number of cabs in the city.

Martin Burbridge, the director of local taxi firm Clover Cabs, was one who criticised the licensing decision taken by Moray Council.

He told the Press and Journal that there were "definitely enough" vehicles for hire in the town, noting that there has been a rise in the number of part-time drivers.

This could be worrying for established taxi companies as well as customers who regularly use cabs, Mr Burbridge said.

He explained that this is because some firms have been forced out of business because of a decline in the amount of work available.

Clients could find it harder to get a taxi during off-peak hours because there are less full-time drivers, he added.

Earlier this month, Edinburgh City Council ruled that private hire drivers would be permitted to charge lower fares than black cab drivers
