A HERO Scots soldier was stabbed to death yesterday as he tried to save a taxi driver.
Scots Guardsman Paul McGee - decorated for bravery in Iraq - died outside his mum's home as he tried to calm an argument between the cabbie and another driver.
A second man got out of the car and knifed hero Paul, 28, in front of horrified onlookers in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire.
He died a year after winning the Queen's Commendation for Bravery for risking his life to rescue another soldier .
Last night, Paul's Commanding Officer described him as "a superb Guardsman and as brave as they come".
Lieutenant Colonel Lincoln Jopp MC added: "The whole of the Scots Guards family has been shocked by the tragic death of one of its heroes."
Last night, a family friend said: "They are just devastated. Paul had been working in recruitment for the army in Scotland and I think the family thought they could relax as he was safely away from danger abroad.
"Then this happened when he was visiting his mum for the weekend."
The friend, who did not wish to be named, said: "Paul was a really nice lad and from what I hear he was just trying to make sure the taxi driver. did not get hurt.
"He and his mother were travelling back from a race night in a taxi to her home in Lochwinnoch.
"On the way, the taxi driver. spotted a car in front which was being driven erratically. So the taxi driver. flashed his lights and eventually overtook this car.
"When the taxi dropped Paul and his mother at their house a man from this other car got out and started arguing with the taxi driver.
"Paul got out of the taxi to try and calm things down and another man left the other car and stabbed him.
"No one realised Paul had been stabbed at first. Apparently the people in the other car drove off.
Police have launched a probe into the "suspicious" death which happened around 1.30am.
Paul was commended for his bravery after risking his own life to save a drowning comrade in Iraq. A "Warrior" vehicle driven by his pal Stephen Ferguson plunged into a canal in 2007. Paul twice dived underwater to try to save his friend.
Tragically, Stephen, 31, lost his fight for life.
Yesterday, Lieutenant Colonel Jopp said: "The men of the 1st Battalion Scots Guards and the Regimental family join me in sending our sincerest and most heartfelt condolences to Paul's mother Anne, his sister Kelly, and his family and friends in Lochwinnoch. We honour our fallen.
"He was doing vital work recruiting for the Scots Guards in Glasgow.
"He was showing that he had a real talent for the job and was an inspirational example to potential recruits."
