Cabbie Charged With Knife Possession In Golders Green

Tuesday 27th October 2009

A licensed cab driver has been charged with possessing a knife which he kept stored in the glove box of his taxi.

The 36-year-old man from Poland, was arrested yesterday after being pulled over by police at about 2.45pm.

He was spotted on a traffic matter, believed to be speeding, in Hamilton Road, Golders Green.

Officers said he was unable to provide an explanation over the manner of his driving, which led them to carry out a search of his cab.

Inside they found a lockable knife stashed away in the glove box.

A police statement said the driver could not give “a reasonable explanation” for why he was carrying it.

He was arrested and charged with possession of a knife yesterday, and is due to appear at Hendon Magistrates Court on November 3.

The reporter has now changed part of the fourth paragraph to include the word Minicab, but still feels it's ok to describe him as a licensed cab driver driving a Taxi.

FFS.

True, but I can't take all of the credit, some of my dear friends from the RMT forum have also e-mailed the reporter expressing their concerns over the use of the word 'Taxi'.

That's the problem with not having a legal definition of the word Taxi.

Up here the word taxi is used in the 1982 act.
Mind you the press still get it wrong here too..................

Minicab driver pleads not guilty to knife possession at Hendon Magistrates court today

A MINICAB driver will face trial at a crown court on charges he was in possession of a knife.

Krysztof Chaszczyn, of Bell Lane, Hendon, appeared at Hendon Magistrates Court today to enter a not guilty plea.

Dressed in a beige jacket and jeans, the 36-year-old, who is originally from Poland, spoke in broken English to confirm his name and address. His defence solicitor confirmed the not guilty plea to magistrates.

Prosecutor for the crown, Peter Lock, told the court Mr Chaszczyn was stopped by police on October 27 while driving his minicab in Golders Green.

A search of the vehicle uncovered a three inch metal lock knife in the glove box.

When questioned about it by officers , Mr Lock said the defendant responded by saying: “It was for opening things - It is not mine, it is a friend's from Poland.”

Chair of the bench, Tyrell Lewis, confirmed the court did have the jurisdiction to oversee the case and potentially pass sentence, but asked the defendant if he wished to have a hearing in front of a judge and jury in a higher court of law.

He indicated that he wanted the trial to take place at crown court.

He was released on unconditional bail to return to Hendon Magistrates Court on December 15 where a date will be set for his first appearance at Wood Green crown court.
