Banned cabbie lied to police http://www.burtonmail.co.uk/burtonmail/ ... ?id=460910 A FORMER taxi driver banned from the roads gave police officers two false names after taking his brotherʼs car without permission, a court has heard. Nasar Hussain Babu was disqualified from driving for six months at the beginning of October, for exceeding the 12-penalty point limit on his licence. He subsequently lost his job. Burton Magistrates’ Court heard yesterday how the 21-year-old was seen travelling through a red light by police in Horninglow Street, just weeks later, at around noon on October 20. Officers followed the Honda Accord and Babu pulled over. He was seen trying to put on his seatbelt. The Goodman Street resident initially apologised to police and said he was on his way to pick up his children. However, Alka Marsden, prosecuting, told the court Babu then gave officers a false name as they went to give him a fixed penalty notice. Subsequent police checks showed up nothing for the name, before Babu lied again and gave another false identity. Once his second lie was exposed, and the name he had given could not be verified, he was arrested and taken to the nearby Burton Police Station, where he was identified by a fingerprint scan. In interview, Babu told officers he gave the false names as he was driving while disqualified. He originally said the car belonged to a friend and that he had taken the keys while in his house. It was later revealed it was his brother’s car. His sibling said he did not want to make a formal complaint. Neil O’Driscoll, defending, said: “He has no previous convictions. This incident was quite depressing as far as he was concerned. “When he was disqualified, he lost his job as a taxi driver and was in a depressed state.” Babu admitted taking a vehicle without consent, driving while disqualified and without insurance, not wearing a seatbelt and obstructing a police officer in the execution of his duty. However, he denied jumping a red light, and the charge was dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service. Magistrates ordered a fast delivery report to be drawn up on Babu. He was due to be sentenced at the time the Mail went to press. |
