South London burglar and his Sutton fence ordered to repay ill gotten gains

A prolific burglar and his handler who stored an “Aladdins cave of property”, have been told to give back £47,500 in cash seized from them by police.

Peter Sonny Martin O’Halloran, 34, of no fixed abode, was on the nation’s most wanted list for two years.

He was arrested with his handler Philip Goncalves, a 33-year-old taxi driver from Sutton, by officers from Surrey Police’s Cross Border Investigation team earlier this year.

Goncalves was found to have stored ornaments and jewellery worth £234,889 and a bag containing £47,050 in cash for his former school friend when police raided his home in Sydney Rd, on February 12.

O’Halloran, who committed burglaries in Sandown Avenue in Esher, Princes Drive in Leatherhead in December 2008, was arrested by detectives at a hotel in Wandsworth on February 6.

The pair were issued a £47,500 cash forfeiture at Woking Magistrates Court on October 26.

A police spokesman said: “Goncalves had been storing and handling all the property stolen by O’Halloran in residential burglaries.

“Identifying and cataloguing this Aladdin’s cave of property was a massive task for a team of police officers and police staff.

“Over 50 residential burglaries were identified from this stolen property across the country.

Speaking after the hearing, Detective Inspector Gary Burn said: “This should send a clear message to people who commit crime in Surrey regardless of where they live.

“Surrey Police is not only determined to catch you and bring you to justice but you will not achieve any financial or material benefit from the crimes you have committed.”

Neither of the men contested the order, brought by Surrey Police’s Economic Crime Unit, and both will face confiscation proceedings in the future.

O’Halloran was convicted at Gloucester Crown Court on July 29 and is currently serving eight years’ jail term.

Goncalves was sentenced in September to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years.

He was also banned from leaving his home between 8.30pm and 5am for six weeks, and ordered to do 280 hours of community service.
