University of Birmingham in warning over false taxi firm claims
STUDENTS at the University of Birmingham have been warned that a taxi firm is falsely claiming the backing of the student union.
Business cards and flyers advertising minicab firm Falcon Cars, distributed around the university’s Edgbaston campus, carried a seal of approval from the Guild of Students.
But the firm lost the accreditation last year due to poor customer service, safety concerns and inconsistent pricing.
The Guild said they had a string of complaints, including claims that taxis frequently turned up late to bookings leaving vulnerable students stranded at night.
Falcon Cars claims the business cards were old ones and distributed by a rival as part of a smear campaign.
Guild vice-president Johnny Davis, responsible for student welfare, said: “The welfare of students is a priority and an accredited taxi contract to support student safety has been in place at the Guild of Students for a number of years. The contract with Falcon Cars came to an end in 2008 due to their poor safety and customer service record.”
He said that Falcon made a bid for the new contract, but lost out to Castle Cars, the Guild’s current preferred cab firm.
He added: “The Guild was recently made aware of flyers being distributed which contained false and inaccurate information.”
A spokesman for Falcon Cars dismissed the allegations as a “smear campaign”.
He said: “They were old flyers and we did not distribute them. Someone is trying to smear our company.”
