Police refuse to let angry cabbies into council meeting

PROTESTING cabbies angry at the treatment of one of their colleagues were removed from a council meeting by the police.

About 20 members of Clacton Taxi Association were removed from a private part of Tendring Council’s licensing committee meeting at Weeley Council Chambers today.

The cabbies claim one of their drivers could be suspended for 28 days for allegedly breaking rules on where drivers can park.

Alan Kirkham, chairman of the association, said cabbies are also upset the authority is issuing too many licences, which is affecting drivers livelihoods.

“We want to support our colleagues and to get some clarification over recent incidents involving licensing officers actions concerning the photographing of taxis at the Morrisons rank in Old Road,” he said.

“We also want them to stop, or at the very least, control the excessive amounts of hackney carriage licence plates being issued.”

Nigel Brown, Tendring Council’s communications manager, said taxi drivers turned up after the public part of the meeting was over.

“Unfortunately they tried to gain entry to the Part B private and confidential section of the meeting and had to be prevented from doing so by the police,” he said.

“A licensing officer went out to speak to them and explain the situation.”

Mr Brown added that at this stage the council is not aware of the reason for the protest but officers and councillors meet with the taxi driver’s association on a regular basis and are always willing to discuss issues with them.
