Wakefield: Dozen taxis off the road in safety crackdown

A dozen cabs were taken off the road during a crackdown on taxis in Wakefield city centre

The 12 Hackney carriage cabs were found to be defective after being inspected by mechanics at a Wakefield Council testing depot during Saturday night's operation.

They were immediately taken off the road and must now undergo a full MOT.

Three drivers were handed £60 fines and three licence points due to defective tyres.

A further three drivers will be summoned to appear at court for multiple defective tyres.

The council's licensing enforcement team, police and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency, carried out the operation.

And the council's benefit fraud team plan to take action after around £6,000 of council tax evasion was discovered.

Coun Graham Stokes, Wakefield Council's cabinet member with responsibility for licensing said: "Our message is clear to people who are licensed to carry passengers – make sure your vehicles are safe and meet all legal standards or we will take action against you."

Inspector Richard Close, of Wakefield Central Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "This operation is one of many designed to help ensure the integrity of licensed vehicles and the safety of passengers and other road users.

"We will keep working with the council and drivers to make sure that drivers are properly licensed and their vehicles are roadworthy.

"We would remind people to use only legitimate cars from established ranks or booked in advance from reputable firms."
