Eight women are sexually attacked by cab drivers, some of them unlicensed, every month in London, according to figures.

The Metropolitan Police recorded 93 cab-related sexual offences in 2008-9, compared with 120 the previous year.

Research has found the number of women using illegal cabs has fallen from one in five in 2003 to fewer than one in 20.

The figures came as a new campaign urging women to help themselves get home safely by using official cabs was launched.

A hard-hitting cinema and television advert has been released alongside a poster campaign ahead of the Christmas party season.

Police across the capital will also target touting hotspots and illegal cab drivers on the streets.

London Mayor Boris Johnson said a small but significant number of younger women continue to use illegal cabs despite the dangers they pose.

He said: "London is one of the safest big cities in the world but it is hugely important that everyone takes this message on board - minicabs that haven't been booked are illegal and a threat to your personal safety.

"Don't take the risk and don't let your friends do it either. Save the Cabwise text number, 60835, in your phone and use it."

It is illegal for any minicab, even if they hold a TfL licence, to tout for business on the street or to carry out a journey that has not been booked.

Police said booking guarantees a trip will be with a licensed driver and vehicle and that a record of your journey is kept.

Chief Superintendent Joe Royle, of the Metropolitan Police, said: "Minicab drivers that approach Londoners anywhere in the capital touting for business pose a real danger to late night travellers.

"Our Cab Enforcement Unit's dedicated anti-touting initiatives will help reduce crime in the run up to Christmas."

Putting posters up at surgeries and hospitals would also be a good idea though, as women tend to go to them regularly
