Madrid taxi drivers continue their protest

There are no taxis serving Barajas Airport for the second day

Although the official protests called by unions were for Thursday, protests by taxi drivers have been continuing in some places across the country.

Today, Friday, sees the second day where Barajas Aiport in Madrid is without taxis, and access roads from the airport were blocked for a time as drivers protest at article 21 of the new Omnibus Law which they say will liberalise the sector.

Units of anti-riot police have gone to Barajas to strengthen the police presence and stop any rioting. There are reports of barricades being set up by the drivers.

A General Assembly of drivers is meanwhile being called in the Madrid region to decide on further action.

Meanwhile the law, which follows EU legislation, was approved in the Spanish Congress on Thursday. They consider the law which allows for hire vehicles with drivers will see ‘a parallel transport system to taxis, unregulated, without tariffs or taxi meters, more in keeping with the third world’. They say the livelihood of 100,000 families in Spain is at risk, along with the quality of service.
