Carlisle cabbie comes to aid of snow-hit OAPs While Carlisle has slipped and slid on snow and ice over the last two weeks, some people have found the humble cabbie coming to their aid. Taxi driver Chris Bray has been rescuing vulnerable people he has seen struggling to overcome the difficulties created by recent weather conditions in Carlisle. He said: “Altogether I have picked up 13 pensioners who were struggling. Two of them were clinging on to the railings at the cemetery as they were trying to get round. They were trying to put flowers on a grave but were unable to because the paths were unwalkable. “If you see a pensioner struggling you can’t very well let them continue to struggle. “One or two other drivers have told me they have done a similar thing, taking people for free. There were a couple of people who said ‘I can’t afford a taxi’, so I said ‘Merry Christmas, hop in the car’.” The generosity comes despite taxi drivers struggling to make fares during the cold spell. While more people may need to get about by taxi, some estates are near impossible to reach, and all journeys are taking two-to-three times longer because of treacherous conditions on the roads. Although Mr Bray, who lives in the Belle Vue area of Carlisle, is helping out elderly people, and some mothers who are struggling to get about with their young children, he believes people should not be in a position to need help in the first place. He said: “For this time of year I thought it was out of order that you couldn’t walk the paths. These pensioners are people who have put a fortune into local government and I think they should be rewarded at least with being able to go about their business. “I was speaking to a couple of pensioners who haven’t been out for ten days now but have had to force themselves to the shops as they can’t just sit in their own homes. The council were out doing some of the pavements yesterday but it’s a little too late.” source: http://www.newsandstar.co.uk/news/ |

Same throughout the country, councils have been caught out, and it's the vulnerable that have suffered. |
