East Cambridgeshire Taxi Changes
Plans that should make it safer to get a taxi in East Cambridgeshire have been approved.

East Cambridgeshire District Council has been consulting with members of the taxi trade about the changes for the last six months.

The changes involve signs, colour and livery on taxis, which can be flagged down on the street, and also on private hire vehicles, which must be booked in advance.

The changes are being bought in to clamp down on illegal taxi drivers, who aren't insured or licensed to pick up passengers.

A number of recommendations have now been approved, including:

•Hackney carriage vehicles, which are taxis that can be flagged down on the street, will all be made the same colour.
•Hackney carriages will have to carry the East Cambridgeshire District Council logo on the front doors.
•Private hire vehicles, which need to be booked in advance, will all carry the same markings.

It's hoped the changes will make it easier for people to distinguish between the different types of taxis available.

Councillor Ron Bradney said: "The main focus of the last six months has been to come up with measures which prevent illegal taxis so if you hail or order a taxi, you can do so safe in the knowledge that they are legitimate."

The changes will be bought in as and when vehicles are replaced, so the owners of the district's taxi firms will not have to pay out money immediately.

The Council says it will keep talking with taxi businesses ahead of the measures being bought in.
