Speeding taxi driver spared ban

A TAXI driver rushing to pick up a fare was caught travelling at almost twice the speed limit, a court has heard.

Ryan Ford, 28, of Palatine Close, Torquay, was fined a total of £235 and given six penalty points after admitting the speeding offence along Torbay Road in October.

Chairman of the magistrates Gwen Hughes told him: "We are alarmed to think a taxi driver is hurtling around the town at such speed."

Torquay magistrates heard Ford was spotted by police driving at a 'steady 59mph' in his Vauxhall taxi in a 30mph zone.

He was working and rushing to pick up his next fare.

They pulled him over at Rathmore Road, near Torquay train station, at 11.45pm on October 2.

The self-employed taxi-driver previously had a clean driving licence.

Representing himself, Ford told the court: "This is my livelihood and I work seven days a week to make ends meet.

"I have never done anything like this before.

"It was stupid."

Magistrates decided not to impose a driving ban.

Mrs Hughes told him: "We do not want to deprive you of your livelihood, but as a taxi driver you really must drive more responsibly."

A judge that had some common sense, well that's a first. The driver should think him self lucky and stick to the speed limit

I wonder if the local council will be as sympathetic?

I wonder if he is refering to the fact that he was speeding or that he had never been caught before?

Not a judge, just a bench of common folks dealing with common folks in a fair and proper manner.

I think "god" prefers to be known as God.

"there for the grace of god goes I" ? Not at 59mph in a 30mph, goes I.

I don't think "God" would care to be honest but I get your point thanks

I have carried out many a good deed over the course of a lifetime, Mr Glave, and have never felt the need to seek publicity for them. On the contrary, I recall having my name removed from the local police event log so that I would not be bothered by the press.

There is an online organisation called something like "good deed Friday" where members carry out a random act of kindness on a friday, on the understanding that they remain anonomous.

I merely observed that this chap got his name in the paper for his good deeds, and wondered why.

My feeling is that charitable acts are equally about the giver of charity, as well as the receiver.

So, Mr Glave, are you a giver or receiver?

And I was not slagging him off, I save that for skippy.

That would depend on whether, or not, the user believed in a singular god...who may then be named "God".

Of course, anyone with a need to be pedantic could then choose to direct their fury at punctuation, grammatical errors, or the fact that the "indefinite article" might then be missing.

Alternatively, we could forget any pedantic ways or sarcasm...and ask captain cab (who modestly uses lower case) to give his view, as he claims to be located somewhere to the right of this "God" character.
