TAXIS in Pendle are being fitted with CCTV cameras as part of a pioneering scheme aimed at cracking down on attacks on cabbies.
The cameras, which will monitor entire vehicles and record sound and images, are being fitted in Hackney and private hire vehicles.
It is hoped they will provide cabbies with greater protection and improve passenger safety.
Pendle Community Safety Partnership has worked with the Home Office to provide the equipment, part of a campaign to cut the number of alcohol- related incidents in taxis.
Mohammed Akram, boss at Nelson-based Cavalier Taxis, said: “If you’re a driver or a customer you need to feel safe, not vulnerable.
“This is an excellent initiative which will help drivers have peace of mind as well as improve their own personal safety.”
The scheme will be piloted for 12 months and, if successful, further funding will be sought for even more camera equipment. Only police will be able to view recorded footage.
