A MAN who worked as a taxi driver without the right licence has been ordered to pay more than £500 by magistrates.
James Patrick Lynch, of Etherstone Street, Leigh, was found guilty of being an unlicensed taxi driver in his absence at a hearing before Wigan and Leigh Magistrates Court.
The court heard the 24-year-old had been reported for driving a private hire cab without a private hire driver’s licence.
He was caught during a police and council operation.
Magistrates fined Lynch £350 and ordered that he pay £184 costs and a £15 surcharge.
Cllr Paul Prescott, of Wigan Council’s cabinet, said: “We welcome this verdict and believe it is a testament to the hard work of our licensing officers in identifying those who are abusing the system.
“We believe this sends a clear message to those who think they can flout the rules in this way.
“They will be caught and when they are, we will not hesitate to take the appropriate action.”
