| Post subject: | Drunken school bus driver banned after crash |
I know this is story does not seem to concern taxis but this chap also operates taxis and the local council have been calling every taxi in the area frantically today trying to get his school contracts covered as they removed all his work from his company after the verdict. A DRUNKEN school bus driver crashed into a building at Beachley Barracks while three times over the limit. A court heard that Anthony Hoskins reversed the single decker coach into the porch of the 1Rifles Welfare Office moments after dropping off 30 schoolchildren. The 49-year-old who owns bus company TJ's Travel in Chepstow pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol when he appeared at Cheltenham Magistrates' Court yesterday. He had just finished dropping off children from Offa's Mead Primary School and Wyedean Secondary School in Sedbury when the collision happened at 4.05pm on Tuesday. Mr Hoskins was arrested and breathalysed at the scene and spent the night in the cells after being found to be three times over the legal limit. He was given a 14-week jail sentence suspended for 12 months and ordered to complete 200 hours' unpaid work. He has been banned from driving for 25 months. The probation officer said Hoskins had been at the funeral of a business colleague the day before and had been drinking heavily at the wake. Speaking in court prosecutor Louise Pinder said the bus had caused significant damage to the welfare building. The incident has sparked a major review at Gloucester- shire County Council who are responsible for school buses. Gareth Blackett, access- manager at the council said: "The driver has been suspended from all county council contracts with immediate effect and we are launching a review into our procedures for dealing with incidents like this." Mr Hoskins' firm TJ's Travel has been contracted by the council since 2006. They have three vehicles and are responsible for seven other council routes. Mr Hoskins was CRB checked and had also been vetted for other criminal convictions.. Mr Blackett said: "The safety of children on our school buses is clearly very important and we have a number of checks in place to make sure drivers are safe." Teachers at Wyedean and Offas Mead said they were shocked by the incident. |
