New-look plates aimed at improving taxi safety

NEW-style vehicle plates are to be used by all Kirklees taxis in a bid to increase safety.

Over the next 12 months the new plates will be appearing on every taxi in the area.

They will be placed near the rear bumper and display new detailed information including the make and the colour of the vehicle, the number of passengers it can carry and the licence expiry date.

The current plates only show the vehicle licence number but the new-style plates should help people identify a taxi more easily in the dark and poor weather.

There are currently more than 1,500 private hire vehicles in Kirklees, along with 213 licensed hackney carriages.

In-car licence discs also have a new look.

Cabinet member for transport Coun Peter McBride, said: “These changes, which were made after consultation with the police and the taxi trade, are all about improving safety.”

“It is important that everyone can identify taxis at a glance so that people don’t compromise their security.”
