CRIME in north Kent has continued to fall according to new statistics released by Kent police.

Figures for July 1 to September 30 last year show a total of 3,636 crimes were recorded in the area, which is down 20.4 per cent from the same period in 2008.

Violent crime, which includes robbery and sexual offences, has fallen by 24.8 per cent from 1,074 recorded offences to 808, and vehicle crime has fallen by 37.1 per cent from 661 to 416 offences.

North Kent has also bucked the county trend of an increase in drug crime by recording just 139 offences, which is down 28.4 per cent from the 194 the previous year.

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Thompson, who is based in north Kent, said: “The reductions in violent crime, criminal damage and drug offences are particularly pleasing.

“We have made it a real priority to identify the crimes and incidents of anti-social behaviour that are of most concern to members of the public.”

The statistics also show burglary of residential properties has fallen by 14.5 per cent from 227 to 194, while criminal damage was down 18.8 per cent from 935 to 759 crimes.

This follows a fall in crime between April 1 and June 30 last year compared to the same period in 2008, with a 15.2 per cent drop to 3,798 crimes.

Police in north Kent had a number of high profile successes in July to September.

In July, 46-year-old Steven Stallion was given a life sentence after being found guilty of murdering 36-year-old Victoria Tomsett at the flat they shared in Sheridan Court, Temple Hill.

Stephen Richardson, aged 34, and 21-year-old Gavin Clark were each jailed for 18 months in September after attacking a taxi driver in his cab outside a pub in Perry Street, Northfleet.

A CCTV camera inside the taxi recorded Richardson, of Greenhill Road, Gravesend, and Clark, of Snelling Avenue, Northfleet, carrying out the vicious assault.

Also in September, 37-year-old Brett Henderson and Joselyn Watson, aged 38, were jailed after violently mugging 67-year-old Gurdial Matharu in Essex Road, Dartford.

Henderson, of Trevithick Drive, Dartford, was given a six year sentence after admitting robbery and assault causing GBH.

Watson, of Priory Road, Dartford, was sentenced to seven years after being found guilty of the same charges.
