Taxi drivers offered their Hackney Carriage licence forms in Braille

Taxi drivers applying for their Hackney Carriage licence are being offered the forms in Braille by a council.

The document, issued by Portsmouth City Council, makes clear that it is also available in large print or audio format for those with sight problems.

A notice at the end reads: "You can get this Portsmouth City Council information in large print, Braille, audio or in another language...."

The council, a member of the Plain English Campaign, defended the forms.

Head of customer services Louise Wilders said: "Obviously, a taxi driver would not need the Braille version, but they might find a foreign language version helpful.

"The form is also for employers to fill in - they could need a Braille version."

The Braille system is a method that is widely used by blind people to read and write. Braille was devised in 1821 by Louis Braille, a blind Frenchman.

Each Braille character or cell is made up of six dot positions, arranged in a rectangle containing two columns of three dots each.

Nothing ever surprises me in relation to what councils do.

In the main our trade is served dismally by councils, and I'm fed up with the local bobby retiring on a vast pension then being inflicted on us.

And/or the common practise of placing any old sh** in the licensing department to save the council making that any old sh** redundant.

Really?

You'd need about 73 versions for the London Minicab version.

Our forms and our test are only available in English because our Council believe that it is important for taxi and PH drivers to have a good command of the English language.

English should be the only language for the forms / tests. We have enough problems without some pc do-gooder trying to "make it easier" for minorities when in actual fact, offering alternative language formats makes it harder for those who can actually communicate in english. There are many people who come to the rank and ask for an "English driver" because they have had bad experiences with non-white drivers.
We have finally convinced the council that making applicants take a literacy and numeracy test is discrimination and now they are going to test everyone including existing drivers at their next renewal.
