Night taxi-sharing in West End

Transport chiefs are launching a late-night cab-sharing scheme to ease the search for a taxi home and stem the use of illegal vehicles.

Marshals in Leicester Square will “matchmake” strangers who live close to each other and are willing to share.

The scheme is due to be approved by Transport for London tomorrow. The Leicester Square scheme follows the success of a similar daytime system at Paddington. Taxi sharing is being trialled at Euston. The latest one would be the first in the early hours, and will target theatre-goers and clubbers.

It will initially run on Friday and Saturday nights between 10pm and 4am. People sharing cab will split the cost, which will be based on a “fixed fare”. Journeys of up to three miles will cost £15 (£5 each for three people sharing). Up to seven miles will cost £30 (£10 each for three); 10 miles £40; and 12 miles £50.

Tomorrow TfL will discuss how much black taxis should charge in the recession and if they should follow the formula of a 2.3 per cent increase.
