Cabbies: We'll block up town
Furious cabbies could block the town centre's roads should they not get a taxi rank they have been promised.
Taxi drivers claim they have been waiting five years for a new rank to be marked out on Waterhouse Street in Hemel Hempstead town centre.
Hertfordshire County Council say it work will definitely begin on it, barring objections, within the next month or so.
But should it not cabbies plan to mobilise, and queue from the current 24-space rank on Marlowes all the way back around Bride Street, blocking the road.
Tony Clarke, head of Hemel Hempstead Taxi Association, said: "Other towns have done it. It will show the public just what the situation is.
"All the drivers support this action – there is not one dissenting voice."
A letter has been sent out to all taxi drivers in the town warning them not to park on the existing 24-car rank on Marlowes.
But Mr Clarke blamed private motorists for forcing them to double park:
"The taxis, pedestrians and buses all have to deal with illegally parked vehicles" he said.
"We have to double park because people park in our stop."
He is meeting with Dacorum Borough Council to raise concerns over treatment of taxis in the town.
