'Taxi drivers threatened to shoot us' January 06 2005 at 10:24AM Hundreds of Limpopo commuters were left stranded this week as tensions between conflicting taxi and bus drivers soared. Commuters have alleged that taxi drivers threatened to shoot them while they were queueing to board buses at Giyani and Malamulele bus ranks. "They threatened to shoot at us if we got into the buses," said Elvis Khoza, a commuter. Khoza said most people were reluctant to travel by taxi to Gauteng because it was dangerous. The conflict stems from disagreements on the use of routes between Gauteng and Limpopo as well as Giyani and Malamulele. 'They threatened to shoot at us if we got into the buses' Limpopo roads and transport spokesperson Phuti Mabelebele on Wednesday said her department was informed that a Gauteng taxi association was behind the conflict. "We were made aware of the situation, and have subsequently ordered the taxi association to stop with immediate effect," she said. The situation has also affected Limpopo residents who work in Gauteng. They couldn't return to their workplaces this week after the festive season. Police have stepped up security at the ranks.
