Southampton cab driver to make huge profit on taxi licence

THE Daily Echo can today reveal the full scale of the city taxi licence lottery that is losing local taxpayers a fortune.

We can report that one cabbie is set to make a profit of £30,000 from a new licence issued by the city council that cost him just £180 a few weeks ago.

The news, that is bound to renew calls for the scrapping of the present taxi licence lottery system, comes at the same time that some city cab drivers are embroiled in a row over displaying the Flag of St George in their vehicles.

The news that cabbie Shouyb Mohammad Yaqub, who “won” his new licence in a controversial secret lottery last year, is now set to make tens of thousands of pounds in such a short time has caused more anger.

It's bound to happen when plates can be sold with vehicles. Perhaps people should have to hold a plate for a certain length of time before it can be sold as a going concern with a vehicle. If the holder of the plate wishes to give up taxi driving before that time has elapsed they should have to return the plate to the licence dept.

Is it time to ask Alex for a Southampton section like the Scottish section? This end of the country seems to be making the running on just about any topic you can think of at the moment!

Someone in the local cab trade has really pi**ed off the local press.

And it would appear those same folks have really pi**ed off the council.

Not a good move for those treasuring their plate premiums.

Post subject:  Not good news for Manchester

We do not need this news in Manchester at the moment. Our council are deferred at the moment , deliberating wether to introduce a lottery system for any further issue of free plates. This is endorsed by our trade cab committee. This is bound to make anybody think twice.

Why can't Manchester just issue the plates under a fairer system than the lottery?

Something like years working in the trade full-time, and not having been issued a plate before.

Or just issue plates to anyone who wants one.

Lenth of service as a criteria has been outlawed in Manchester. The new legal advise is a lottery or an advert inviting applications on every issue.

Just issuing to anyone, will be the only answer. I have had an argument with somebody today in Manchester who gave me the same old sh*t. If they de-limt they will fall foul of emmissions laws, there is nowhere to rank, people will go bankrupt, there are to many cabs etc. Evidence is proof. If you take Taxis and PH as one sum total. Where de-limiting has taken place the overall number of vehicles has reduced. Private hire nimbers have been decimated as they converted to hackneys. So less vehicles mean less emmissions. If people have nowhere to rank and there are less PH vehicles, so hackneys will join PH circuits. People are less likely to go bankrupt because there are less vehicles, less emmissions and more importantly less cost. The only thing against de-limiting is the loss of plate value. Big deal, it will mean you can rent a cab at London Values. An old cab in London (the dearest city in England) cost £160 a week to rent. Here in Manchester, my nightman and I, pay £430 a week for a nine year old banger. De-limit, bring it on.

Of course in reality your council will not increase rank spaces, indeed, your council will be less tolerant of over-ranking due to complaints from the public.....like in Tendring or Sutton in Ashfield, or Nottingham, or Leeds, or Cambridge or Stoke or Bristol to name but a few......and you'll get suspended for illegall ranking.....like in Sefton....or Liverpool or Wirral or Tendring......to name but a few.

Then of course you have the conditions for the new vehicles licensed.....2 or 3 years old on.....maybe 10 years off?

And you'll be able / forced to pay a PH operator for the use of his equipment.....at his rates obviously.

Yeah.....bring it on.

You cannot get on a rank in Manchester at the moment. We are not allowed outside hotels. Private hire cars are. The trade is nearly at a standstill, but, a plate changed hands this week for 64 grand. It has to come to an end sometime, why not now, when people will be reluctent to flood the market.
As for paying £100 a week to a radio company, my nightman and I will still be quids in with the money we save paying back 64k in extra rent.
