The incident happened on St Nicholas Street, near the Golden Lion pub, at about 1.15am on Friday.
A spokesman said: “The driver was verbally abused with racist language by a man who had done a u-turn in a dark coloured Ford from Botchergate.
“He jumped out of the car, approached the male taxi driver and shouted at him.
“The offender also removed the keys from the ignition of the taxi and threw them down the street. These were handed back to the taxi driver by a passing pedestrian.”
