I am sure the council is capable of weighing the evidence and comming to a decision. however Nigel you do not have sufficient experience of such things. |

he's gone: http://makeashorterlink.com/?O2D012A3A TAXI DRIVER'S LICENCE REVOKED AFTER POSTAL THEFT CONVICTION 12:00 - 13 January 2005 A Plymouth taxi driver convicted of stealing packages from a Royal Mail sorting office when he was a postal worker has had his private hire licence revoked. Gary Horrell was granted the licence in September last year when he joined city firm Taxifast, but the 44-year-old was convicted last month of stealing DVDs, CDs and computer games worth thousands of pounds and selling them online. Plymouth City Council's licensing committee decided to revoke his licence after a short hearing on Tuesday. Members heard that between January and July last year Horrell, a postal worker for 15 years, stole many postal packages. At his home in Grimspound Close, Leigham, police found 34 DVDs, 26 CDs and seven computer games. Nine more packages were found in his car. Plymouth Magistrates' Court imposed a 200-hour community order and a three-month curfew order. He was also ordered to pay the £2,395 it had cost Royal Mail to take the case to court. After being charged, Horrell found work with Taxifast but had to inform the licensing department of his conviction. He told the committee: "Up until this year, I have always been an honest person. I give my word nothing like this will happen again. I'm a popular person and I get on very well with the public. I enjoy my job immensely." Since becoming a taxi driver, he had handed all property mistakenly left in his vehicle by passengers to the police. He said: "I have on many occasions found mobile phones, a gold watch and jewellery and I have taken all these items to Charles Cross police station." Solicitor Geoffrey Parlby said of his client's stealing: "It had almost become addictive behaviour. It probably took a combination of crises in his life for him to act in this destructive way." But Councillor Chris Mavin, co-chair of the committee, told Horrell: "By your own admission, this was a sustained period of theft." He has the right to appeal against the revocation of his licence, and refused to comment after the hearing. ................ i'm surprised to learn that he was driving with us, as i'd not heard anything about it at all. but i'm not at all surprised at the councils decision to revoke his licence. |
